It was, again, the graffiti project performed last semester. It seems that the
students really don't remember what they learned from the project because they
just remember performing the act and now what they did afterwords for reflection.

**this is a great start. Think about this data and build it in to your service-learning project. What can we do with their strengths in math?**
As of yesterday, 2.18.09, only three students observed has participated in a
service-learning project. It was the graffiti project performed last semester
at Ed White. What really concerned me was when I told them if they can done a
service-learning project in the past, they had no clue what I was saying until
I mentioned the graffiti project. I asked them if they had done any other project
but all I got was blank stares. Next week, I plan to ask again because I never have
seen these before because of the different block day. I usually go on A day block but
it was B day block because of the holiday on Monday.

Almost all of our students love sports.

    Being helpful and receiving help:
Primarily, the only time our students help others or receive help is in school from friends and family (mostly with homework).

didn’t know. What does this tell you about the need for a S-L project?
    Additional observations:
There are approximately twenty students in our classes with the racial makeup consisting of mostly African-American, with a few White and Hispanic. In addition, there are about 8-10 GT students but no Special Ed in the classes we observe.

Telicia and Stephanie surveyed about forty 6th grade students and learned a great deal about them.
    Interests:
The majority of our students like to learn math, social studies, and science.
Almost all of our students love sports.
Many of our students think about their future and what they are going to do with their life.
    Skills and talents:
The majority of our students are good at one or more of the following: sports, art, drawing, singing, dancing, and acting.
    Being helpful and receiving help:
Primarily, the only time our students help others or receive help is in school from friends and family (mostly with homework).
We also found that they have never helped anybody they didn’t know.
    Additional observations:
There are approximately twenty students in our classes with the racial makeup consisting of mostly African-American, with a few White and Hispanic. In addition, there are about 8-10 GT students but no Special Ed in the classes we observe.
We have noticed that several of our students have a negative attitude toward reading and English and are failing. In addition, they are very disrespectful to their teacher.
We believe that a service learning project would benefit them in several ways. It would help them feel successful, improve their personal skills, develop as leaders, and grow as they contribute to their community and school and help others.
