Telicia and Stephanie surveyed about forty 6th grade students and learned a great deal about them.

Interests:

The majority of our students like to learn math, social studies, and science. How do you know? Is it their teachers? What about these subjects do they enjoy?

Almost all of our students love sports.

Many of our students think about their future and what they are going to do with their life.

Skills and talents:

The majority of our students are good at one or more of the following: sports, art, drawing, singing, dancing, and acting. Is this what they said about themselves?

Being helpful and receiving help:

Primarily, the only time our students help others or receive help is in school from friends and family (mostly with homework).

We also found that they have never helped anybody they didn’t know. What does this tell you about the need for a S-L project?

Additional observations:

There are approximately twenty students in our classes with the racial makeup consisting of mostly African-American, with a few White and Hispanic. In addition, there are about 8-10 GT students but no Special Ed in the classes we observe.

We have noticed that several of our students have a negative attitude toward reading and English and are failing. In addition, they are very disrespectful to their teacher.

We believe that a service learning project would benefit them in several ways. It would help them feel successful, improve their personal skills, develop as leaders, and grow as they contribute to their community and school and help others.
